Walk4Me is a recording tool. It records your iPhone's sensors, location and video during a session you start. Where those recordings go is up to you: they stay on your phone unless you share them or connect the app to a server.
01What the app records
Only while a session is running, and only with your permission for each:
- Motion sensors: accelerometer, gyroscope, orientation (pitch, yaw, roll), gravity, and step count.
- Location: your precise position (GPS), including while the screen is locked during a session.
- Video and sound in video mode, with the project, the Person ID and the time written into the picture.
- Phone condition saved with the recording: battery level and charging, thermal state, low-power mode, whether the app is in front, and GPS accuracy.
- The project name and Person ID you enter (by default "Self" and "1"), used to name the files. When more than one device records the same walk, the Person ID can carry a device number, for example "1-2".
02Without a server: nothing leaves your phone
If you don't connect the app to a server, your recordings are stored only on your iPhone. They leave it only when you share or export them yourself (for example with the Share button or Save Video). Walk4Me's developer does not receive them.
03With a server you choose
You can connect the app to a server by typing its address or scanning a setup QR code. Recordings are then sent to that server, and the person or organization that runs it decides how they are stored, kept, shared and deleted. Their own privacy terms apply to that data. Addresses you type yourself are shown in the app's Settings; addresses set by a setup QR code are not shown, though the app still uses them.
A team's setup code can include a consent. The app shows it right after the scan and uses nothing from the code until you agree; I agree becomes available once you have scrolled to the end of the text. Your answer (agree or not) is sent to that server with the time, the Person ID, the app's random phone identifier and a fingerprint of the exact text you saw, so the team keeps a record of it. If you delete the code from the app, the consent is shown again the next time the code is scanned.
When a server is used, the app also sends:
- Sign in with Apple (only when you join a server with a team's setup code): an anonymous identifier from Apple. Walk4Me never asks Apple for your name or email address.
- Phone details: a random identifier created by the app on your phone, the phone model, iOS version and app version, so the server can tell your phones apart and manage them.
If you use a server that Walk4Me's developer runs, the developer is that server's operator and handles your data only to provide that service.
When you play a recording in the app, its GPS path is shown on Apple Maps, so Apple receives the map area being shown (not the recording).
04What we don't do
- No advertising, no tracking across other apps or websites, and no analytics or third-party SDKs in the app.
- We don't sell or rent your data.
05Your choices and deleting your data
- On your phone: delete recordings in the app, or delete the app to remove everything stored by it.
- Your account: Settings › Online › Delete account removes the link between your Apple ID and the server and signs you out.
- A person on your Apple ID: Settings › Online › Delete removes that person from your Apple ID on the server; Delete all removes every one. You stay signed in.
- On a server: ask whoever runs that server to delete recordings it holds.
- You can turn off camera, microphone, location or motion access at any time in iOS Settings.
06Recording other people and children
Walk4Me is not directed at children. If you record someone else, including a child with a parent's or guardian's permission, you are responsible for getting their permission and for following the laws that apply.
07Security
Recordings sent to a server travel over encrypted connections (HTTPS). On the phone they are protected by iOS.
